About READ Groups

July 4th, 2009

Purpose of a READ group:

To provide a place in which we are able to encourage one another, experience accountability, and pray together as we share how we are:

  • Hearing from God through the scriptures
  • Experiencing him in our life
  • Confessing our struggles
  • Participating with Him in his mission

Characteristics of a READ group:

  • Hearing God, not a bible study. Discussion centers on how individuals are hearing from & experiencing God. It is not a bible study.
  • 2-4 people so that the time together can be authentic, personal and participatory.
  • Same gender to allow for open sharing of personal struggles.
  • Formed around a community.
  • Committed to multiply.
  • Each group has at least one mentor who has a mentor.

READ Group Guidelines:

  • Meet once per week for an hour
  • Spend 45 minutes in discussion. 15 minutes in prayer together.
  • Keep your sharing focused so that each member has time to talk.
  • Everyone participates; no one dominates.
  • We are here to support one another. We will not attempt to “fix” one another.
  • Anonymity and confidentiality are basic requirements. What’s shared in the group stays in the group. The only exception is when someone threatens to injure themselves or others.
  • Everyone agrees to help each other live up to these guidelines.
